The Consejo del Bahoruco Oriental (Council for the Eastern Bahoruco) is a non governmental organization (NGO) composed by people and organizations that work together with the goals of improving the living standard of the inhabitants of the eastern region of the Sierra de Bahoruco through sustainable actions that, taking care of the basic needs of the inhabitants of the zone, protect the natural resources (biological, physical and scenic).

To attain its proposed goals, COBAHOR carry out, through its members, activities according to the specific objectives established in its Statues. COBAHOR success is not only measured by its own results but as well by the activities done by its members.

COBAHOR hopes to be a model for the integral development in other regions of the country, a model based in the community participation, assuring so the conservation of human and natural resources.

Objetives

Article 2. The main goal of the Consejo del Bahoruco Oriental is to promote and carry out activities which could attain the conservation and sustainable use of the cultural and natural resources that exist in the region of Eastern Bahoruco… through the execution of a plan with the following general objectives:

  • To promote, organize, coordinate and execute the integral management in the Easter Bahoruco region.
  • To get the involvement of the communities in the integrated management of the area, trying to get benefits for them so they could have socially and economically healthy lives.

Article 3. Among the specific objectives of the Consejo del Bahoruco Oriental… are:

  • To determine and zone the appropriate use of the land.
  • To promote and support the preservation of the remaining natural forests and to promote the recovery of the degraded areas.
  • To cooperate in the protection of the water producing zones, the sources and flows of rivers and stream.
  • To teach and use appropriate methods on sustainable development.
  • To promote basic and applied research in the region.
  • To promote and execute educational, interpretative and recreational activities in the natural areas, subject to their carrying capacity.
  • To cooperate with the inhabitants so they could understand the needed actions to get a rational and sustained use of the natural resources and the environment.
  • To promote activities that could lead to the improvement of the basic health services and to train the communities so they could take care by themselves of their health problems, and of the services of formal and informal education, and the transference of appropriate technology.
  • To promote economical diversification in the zone, looking for improving the employment situation so there could be development of the communities without damage to the environment.
  • To take the needed steps and to promote the construction, improvement and maintenance of the needed infrastructure…
  • To promote forestry projects with native species.
  • To facilitate the inter institutional cooperation and coordination among the various official or private, national or international organisms that are working in the region and that have similar objectives…
